Light is light, right? Not even close.

If you’ve ever tried to research laser skin treatments and ended up more confused than when you started, you’re not alone. The terminology alone is enough to make your head spin. BBL. IPL. Fractional. CO2. Clear + Brilliant. Laser Genesis. They all involve some form of light or laser energy, they all promise better skin, and they’re all available at Spa Bella. But they are not interchangeable, and choosing the wrong one for your skin concern is one of the most common reasons people feel underwhelmed by their results.

So let’s clear it up. Here’s what each of our laser and light-based treatments actually does, who it’s right for, and how to think about where you fall on the spectrum.

First: The Difference Between Light and Laser

Before we get into the individual treatments, one distinction worth understanding: not everything marketed as a “laser treatment” is technically a laser.

BBL and IPL use broadband light, intense pulses of light across a broad spectrum of wavelengths. That light is filtered and targeted, but it’s not a single coherent beam the way a true laser is. This matters because broadband light is exceptionally good at targeting specific chromophores in the skin (pigment and blood vessels, primarily) without affecting the surrounding tissue.

True lasers, like Clear + Brilliant, Laser Genesis, and CO2, emit a single focused wavelength and work differently depending on whether they’re ablative (removing surface skin) or non-ablative (working beneath the surface without removing it). Each approach has its place, and understanding which mechanism applies to your concern is the first step to choosing the right treatment.

BBL / IPL Photofacial: The Gold Standard for Tone and Pigmentation

BBL (broadband light) is what most people are thinking of when they picture a photofacial. It’s the treatment behind a lot of the genuinely even, clear skin you see on people who look great in natural light without any apparent effort.

The light energy targets melanin (brown spots, sun damage, freckles) and hemoglobin (redness, broken capillaries, rosacea). The pigmented or vascular cells absorb the light, heat up, and break down. The body then clears them naturally over the following weeks, leaving the skin more even in tone.

BBL is ideal if your primary concerns are sun damage, brown spots, uneven skin tone, redness or flushing, visible capillaries, or the early signs of photoaging. It’s also one of the most researched treatments for photorejuvenation — the broad improvement of skin quality associated with cumulative sun exposure over time.

Denver’s altitude gives us one of the highest UV indexes in the country, which means most of our clients are dealing with more sun damage than they realize. BBL is often where we start.

Downtime is minimal. You’ll likely see some darkening of spots before they flake away over one to two weeks — that’s the process working. Redness resolves within a day or two. Most clients do a series of two to three treatments spaced about a month apart, then maintenance once or twice a year.

Clear + Brilliant: The Preventive Treatment That Keeps Your Skin Ahead of the Curve

Clear + Brilliant is a fractional non-ablative laser, which means it works by creating thousands of microscopic treatment zones in the skin without removing the surface entirely. Think of it as controlled, precise micro-damage that triggers the skin’s natural healing response and stimulates collagen production.

It’s gentler than CO2 by a significant margin, and that’s intentional. Clear + Brilliant is designed for maintenance and prevention, not dramatic correction. It improves skin texture, reduces the appearance of pores, evens tone, and gives the skin a brightness and smoothness that accumulates over a series of treatments.

This is the treatment that has developed a reputation as a “red carpet” treatment in aesthetic circles, because the results are noticeable and real but don’t require significant downtime. Most people have some redness for 24 to 48 hours and then look like a more polished version of themselves.

Clear + Brilliant is ideal if you’re in your late 20s to 40s and want to stay ahead of texture changes and early signs of aging, if you want to maintain results between more intensive treatments, or if you’re newer to laser treatments and want to start with something effective but lower-stakes. It’s also a good entry point for people who have heard about CO2 but aren’t ready for that level of commitment.

A series of four to six treatments is typically recommended, spaced two to four weeks apart.

Laser Genesis: The Quiet Overachiever

Laser Genesis doesn’t get as much attention as BBL or CO2, but it has a dedicated following for good reason. It’s a non-ablative Nd:YAG laser that works by gently heating the upper dermis, stimulating collagen production and reducing redness without any surface disruption at all.

There is essentially no downtime. Most people walk out looking slightly flushed and that’s it.

What Laser Genesis addresses over a series of treatments: diffuse redness and rosacea, large pores, fine lines, uneven texture, and a general dullness or lack of luminosity in the skin. It’s particularly good for people with chronic redness or sensitive skin who need something effective but can’t tolerate more aggressive treatments.

It’s also a strong complement to other treatments — Laser Genesis pairs well with BBL for comprehensive skin quality improvement, and it’s a good maintenance treatment between more intensive sessions.

Results are cumulative rather than dramatic after a single session, which is the trade-off for the zero downtime. Most clients do a series of five to six treatments to see the full benefit.

CO2 DOT Fractional: The Heavy Hitter

If BBL and Clear + Brilliant are at one end of the intensity spectrum, CO2 DOT Fractional is at the other. This is the most powerful laser treatment we offer, and it produces the most significant results — but it comes with real downtime and requires real commitment to the aftercare process.

CO2 works by ablating the skin in a precise fractional pattern — the DOT stands for “dermal optical thermolysis,” which describes the way the laser creates microscopic columns of treated tissue while leaving surrounding skin intact to accelerate healing. The result is dramatic resurfacing that addresses deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, acne scarring, skin laxity, and textural irregularities that lighter treatments simply can’t reach.

The results are real and lasting. A single CO2 treatment can produce improvements that would take years of lighter treatments to approximate. But the recovery is meaningful — expect seven to fourteen days of healing, during which the skin will be red, swollen, and peeling. This is not a “back at work tomorrow” treatment.

CO2 is ideal for clients with more advanced signs of aging, significant textural damage or scarring, or skin concerns that haven’t responded adequately to lighter treatments. It’s also appropriate for clients who want the most significant possible result from a single treatment rather than incremental improvement over a series.

We take the consultation process for CO2 seriously because candidacy matters, such as skin type, sun exposure history, medications, and realistic expectations all factor into whether this is the right treatment for you and when.

Quick Comparison: Which Treatment Is Right for You?

Clear + BrilliantTexture, pores, prevention, early agingLight (1–2 days)
Laser GenesisChronic redness, rosacea, sensitive skin, dullnessNone

So Which One Is Right for You?

If your main concern is brown spots, redness, or uneven tone, start with BBL. If you want to improve texture, maintain youthful skin, and prevent early aging with minimal downtime, Clear + Brilliant is your treatment. If you have chronic redness, sensitive skin, or want a zero-downtime option that works cumulatively on overall skin quality, Laser Genesis deserves a serious look. If you have significant wrinkles, deep texture damage, acne scarring, or want the most dramatic single-treatment result available, CO2 DOT Fractional is the conversation to have.

And if you’re looking at that list and thinking your concerns span more than one category, you’re probably right. Many of our clients benefit from a combination approach, and mapping out a treatment plan that sequences or combines these modalities is exactly what a consultation at Spa Bella is designed to do.

The right laser treatment isn’t the one with the most impressive-sounding name. It’s the one that matches your specific skin, your specific concerns, and your specific tolerance for downtime. We’ll help you figure out which that is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do BBL and Laser Genesis in the same appointment?
Yes, in many cases these two treatments complement each other well and can be combined in a single session. BBL addresses pigmentation and vascular concerns while Laser Genesis works on redness, texture, and collagen stimulation — together they cover a lot of ground. Your provider will confirm at your consultation whether combining makes sense for your skin on that day.

Are these treatments safe for all skin tones?
This is an important question and one we take seriously. BBL and IPL require more careful consideration for deeper skin tones, as the light targets pigment and can affect melanin-rich skin differently. Clear + Brilliant and Laser Genesis are generally safe across a wider range of skin tones. CO2 also requires careful evaluation for darker skin. Candidacy is always assessed individually at consultation; there is no one-size-fits-all answer, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being thorough enough.

Which treatment is best if I’ve never had laser done before?
Clear + Brilliant is often the best entry point. It’s effective, has minimal downtime, and gives both you and your provider useful information about how your skin responds to laser energy before moving to anything more intensive. BBL is another strong starting point if pigmentation or redness is your primary concern. We rarely recommend starting with CO2 for a first-time laser client unless there’s a specific clinical reason to do so.
