You did the research, booked the appointment, and showed up. The treatment went great. And then…you went home and did something you weren’t supposed to do, because nobody told you not to, or because you forgot, or because it seemed fine at the time.
It happens constantly. And it’s one of the most common reasons people feel like a treatment didn’t work as well as they expected.
The 48 hours after any professional skin treatment is an active window, not a passive one. Your skin is in a state of response. What you do during that window can support your results, extend them, and protect the investment you just made. What you don’t do can undermine all of it.
Here’s the breakdown by treatment, so you always know exactly where you stand.
Botox and Neuromodulators (Dysport, Letybo, Xeomin)
Do: Stay upright for at least four hours after your appointment. Light facial movement is actually fine and may help the product settle into the targeted muscles. Drink plenty of water. Keep your skincare routine gentle for the rest of the day.
Don’t: Lie down flat, bend forward for extended periods, or do anything that puts sustained pressure on your face within those first four hours. Skip intense exercise for 24 hours since elevated heart rate and blood pressure can increase the risk of bruising and may affect how the product distributes. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours for the same reason. Don’t rub, massage, or apply pressure to the treated areas. And skip any other facial treatments, including facials, laser, or microneedling, for at least two weeks.
Why it matters: Neuromodulators need time to bind to the nerve receptors they’re targeting. Disrupting the treated area too soon can affect placement and distribution. The results you see at two weeks are the real results — don’t judge the outcome at 48 hours.
Dermal Fillers (Juvéderm, Voluma, Vollure, Volbella)
Do: Apply ice or a cold pack gently to reduce swelling and bruising, but do not press hard. Sleep slightly elevated the first night if you can manage it. Stay hydrated. Arnica gel or supplements can help with bruising if you’re prone to it.
Don’t: Apply heat to the treated area in any form: hot showers aimed at your face, saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Don’t press, massage, or manipulate the filler, let it settle. Skip dental appointments for two weeks if at all possible, since the positioning required can put pressure on facial filler. Avoid alcohol and blood thinners for 24 hours.
Why it matters: Fresh filler is still integrating with the surrounding tissue. Heat and physical pressure can affect where it settles. Swelling is normal for the first few days and will distort how the result looks — most people see their true result at the one to two week mark, not immediately after the appointment.
BBL / IPL Photofacial
Do: Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the skin calm and hydrated. Use a mineral SPF every day without exception starting immediately — your skin is significantly more sun-sensitive after this treatment. Expect some redness, mild swelling, and the appearance of darkened spots (this is the pigment oxidizing before it clears, and it means the treatment is working).
Don’t: Go in the sun without SPF, period. Skip active skincare ingredients, such as retinols, vitamin C, exfoliating acids, for at least five days. Avoid heat exposure: saunas, hot tubs, intense exercise that produces significant sweating. Don’t pick at darkened spots or flaking skin as the treated pigment works its way out. Skip makeup for 24 hours if possible to let the skin breathe.
Why it matters: The skin is actively processing the light damage done to pigmented cells. Sun exposure during this window can cause new pigmentation or worsen existing spots. Giving the skin a clean, calm environment for the first 48 hours significantly affects how evenly the treatment clears.
Laser Resurfacing (CO2)
Do: Follow your provider’s specific aftercare instructions closely. CO2 is the most intensive laser treatment we offer and the aftercare is more involved than other treatments. Keep the skin moisturized with the recommended products. Use a cold compress for comfort. Protect the skin from all sun exposure.
Don’t: This is not the time to improvise. No active skincare ingredients until cleared by your provider. No sun exposure whatsoever. No makeup until the skin has healed sufficiently, which your provider will determine at your follow-up. Don’t pick at peeling skin — it will peel, and picking leads to scarring and uneven results.
Why it matters: CO2 resurfacing removes layers of skin. The healing process is real and requires real support. Shortcuts during recovery are the primary cause of unsatisfactory outcomes and complications.
Microneedling and Vampire Facial
Do: Keep the skin clean and moisturized with gentle, fragrance-free products. Use the products your provider recommends — this is not the time to experiment with anything new. Drink plenty of water. The redness and sensitivity you feel in the first 24 to 48 hours is normal and expected.
Don’t: Apply makeup for at least 24 hours, ideally longer — the micro-channels created by the needles are still open and introducing bacteria is a real risk. Skip active ingredients (retinols, acids, vitamin C) for five to seven days. Avoid sun exposure and apply SPF diligently. No gym for 24 to 48 hours -— sweat in open micro-channels is a contamination risk. Don’t touch your face more than necessary.
Why it matters: Microneedling works by creating controlled injury that triggers a healing response. That healing response is your result. Anything that introduces irritation, bacteria, or inflammation during the early window interferes with that process.
DiamondGlow
Do: Enjoy it! DiamondGlow has minimal downtime and most people look immediately better after the treatment. Keep the skin moisturized and wear SPF. The serums infused during your treatment continue working after you leave, so give them time to do their job.
Don’t: Apply heavy makeup immediately after if you can avoid it. Skip active exfoliants for 48 hours — you just had exfoliation done professionally, and layering acids or retinols on top too soon is redundant at best and irritating at worst. Avoid heat exposure for 24 hours.
Why it matters: DiamondGlow is one of the gentler treatments on this list, but the skin has still been exfoliated and infused. Treating it gently for 48 hours protects the results and lets the active ingredients do their work uninterrupted.
Chemical Peels
Do: Keep the skin moisturized and protected. Let the peeling happen on its own timeline — it may start within a few days depending on the depth of the peel. Use only the products recommended by your provider. Wear SPF every single day.
Don’t: Pick, peel, or pull at flaking skin under any circumstances. This is the number one cause of scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after a peel. Avoid active ingredients, exfoliants, and anything harsh. No sun exposure. No sweating heavily for 48 hours. Skip retinol for at least a week.
Why it matters: A peel is chemically exfoliating layers of skin. The skin underneath that’s being revealed is new and vulnerable. Protecting it during the process is what determines how even, smooth, and clear your result is.
The Rules That Apply to Everything
Across every treatment on this list, a few things are universally true.
Living at 5,280 feet means Denver’s UV index is no joke and our air is notoriously dry. Sun protection and heavy-duty hydration are doubly non-negotiable here. Mineral SPF 30 or higher, every day, no exceptions, not just on sunny days, not just in summer.
Heat is almost always the enemy in the first 48 hours. Saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, hot yoga, and even very hot showers can increase swelling, affect product placement, and slow healing depending on the treatment.
When in doubt, ask us. The fastest way to get a straight answer about whether something is okay after your specific treatment is to call or text the office. We would always rather answer a quick question than have a client second-guess themselves and do something that affects their results.
Your appointment is the beginning of the process, not the end of it. Treat those 48 hours accordingly.
